Programs & Services

SPALC Adult Education offers programs & services such as: basic skills improvement, GED preparation, life skills development, pre-employment training and work experience. SPALC also acts as a resource for social services.

Overview of Current Programs & Activities

BASIC SKILLS & GED PREP
Students are engaged in Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Language, and Computer Literacy.
St. Paul Adult Learning Center offers general education studies, which includes Adult Basic
Education (ABE), preparation for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet), refresher
courses/remediation, which include tutoring and study skills training, including dropout prevention
strategies.

LIFE SKILLS INSTRUCTION
1) Teen Pregnancy Prevention
2) Anger & Conflict Management.
3) Alcohol & Substance Abuse Prevention.
4) Character Education.
5) Parenting Skills
6) Independent Living Skills
7) Goal Setting
8) Personal Development

JOB SKILLS INSTRUCTION
Students train in career exploration, job research, resume writing, attire, teamwork, interviewing,
communication, positive attitude, job shadow experience & other essential work related skills.

FINANCIAL LITERACY
Students learn basic budgeting, saving, investments, etc…

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT RETREATS
Retreats focus on student growth and development in the areas of personal relationships, goal
setting, positive self image, & team building.

COUNSELING
Counseling is made available for students who have very difficult life issues and habits to
overcome.

VOLUNTEERISM
St. Paul Adult Learning Center partners with the St. Vincent DePaul Community Kitchen to give
our students a practical way of serving their community. Each year all St. Paul students participate
in a food drive and a day to help serve the homeless and needy.

ATHLETICS
In 2010-11 St. Paul ALC began offering school sponsored athletics in basketball, & track
& field. St. Paul is the first and only Louisiana Community Based Adult Education
Program to offer school sponsored athletics!

ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING
In 2012 St. Paul ALC began giving its students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of business ownership. We start with basic business concepts, and progress to finance, economics, and
entrepreneurship.
