Providing positive, holistic education resulting in successful life transformations since 1983. St. Paul Adult Learning Center is making a difference in our community.

St. Paul Adult Learning Center is a holistic Adult Education Program located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and is fully accredited by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS). Our Center has served over 6,000 persons in 32 years and expects to serve 100-150 persons for fiscal year 2015-16. Classes are held from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The program is offered 38 weeks per year.

Organizational History

St. Paul Adult Learning Center is located in one of the largest poverty pockets in Baton Rouge and has offered poverty intervention services since 1983. As a community-based provider in its 32nd year, the center stands as an oasis of hope and affirmation in a desert of poverty and discouragement. Although located in the Eden Park community, services are open to all under-educated, low to moderate-income persons in the city of Baton Rouge. Services have included the following: 1984 until 1989 – Eden Park residents and incarcerated persons; 1990 until 1999 – welfare clients; 2000 until the present – adults and high-risk youth.

Overview of Current Programs & Activities

BASIC SKILLS & GED PREP

Students are engaged in Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Language, and Computer Literacy.
St. Paul Adult Learning Center offers general education studies, which includes Adult Basic
Education (ABE), preparation for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet), refresher
courses/remediation, which include tutoring and study skills training, including dropout prevention
strategies.

Our Outcomes

Since 2010, SPALC has one of the highest student academic advancement rates in East Baton Rouge Parish. Almost ninety-five percent (95%) of all SPALC students have increased multiple educational functioning levels. (Language Arts, Reading, & Math) We have a 70% student retention rate, 40% of students gain employment, 70% of students retain employment, 70% of students have no repeat criminal offenses, and 25% of students attain a their high school equivalency diploma.
